State College outfielder Thomas Spitz is the Centre Daily Times’ Spike of the Week.
The 23-year-old West Chester native was 6 for 19 during the first five games of State College’s six-game road trip. He scored three runs, knocked in another and stole a base. He was 3 for 5, plus two walks, during Thursday’s 14-inning 6-5 marathon loss to Aberdeen. All of his hits came in the ninth inning or later.
He improved his batting average from .248 to .258 during the first five games of the road trip. The 32nd-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals this year out of Wingate also has a .348 on-base percentage with three doubles, three triples and 10 RBIs, along with seven stolen bases, in 31 games this season.
