State College’s Tommy Edman provided a spark in the first inning and put the finishing touch on his team’s win in the ninth.
The Spikes leadoff hitter doubled and scored the game’s first run on a triple by Vince Jackson in the first inning. In the ninth, Edman drilled an RBI triple to right field and scored the final run on Andy Young’s single as the Spikes cruised to a 5-0 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Sunday at Eastwood Field.
Edman and Jackson each had two hits, scored two runs and drove in one run to pace State College (41-20) offensively.
Spikes starting pitcher Jordan Hicks struck out four and allowed five hits in five scoreless innings to earn the win. Relievers Connor Jones and Eric Carter both pitched two scoreless innings to finish the shutout. Carter picked up his sixth save.

Tanner Tully allowed two runs and three hits in five innings for Mahoning Valley (29-31) in the loss.
State College took a 2-0 lead after Jackson’s RBI triple and Ryan McCarvel’s sacrifice fly in the first inning.
The Spikes didn’t score again until the eighth inning.
Jackson singled, stole second and reached third on a groundout before scoring on a fielding error by Mahoning Valley’s Gavin Collins.
In the ninth, Edman tripled to score Mick Fennell and scored on a single by Young to make it 5-0.
The Spikes will look to finish the sweep of Mahoning Valley at 7:05 p.m. Monday. Carson Cross (4-4, 3.25 ERA) will be on the mound for State College, while Brady Aiken (1-0, 4.50) will get the start for Mahoning Valley.
