Young Scholars of Central Pennsylvania Charter School started requiring masks for students and staff on Monday after COVID cases hit double digits last week.

Grades 6-8 and two fifth grade classes went to remote learning on Friday due to COVID cases and staffing concerns, Principal Levent Kaya said in an email. Over 50 absences were reported on Friday from other grades.

The school had experienced low case numbers from February to April with a sudden spike in May.

“At the end of April there was one and the first week of May there were three. Last week there were 26 reported cases in school,” Kaya wrote.

All classes are currently back in person and there are no current plans for students to return to remote learning at this time. Masks will be worn until June 1 but all end of year activities will continue as planned, Kaya wrote.
