Centre County best bets: ‘Angels in America,’ owl prowl and more
Centre County has a lot to offer this week, from a choir concert to a late night owl hunt.
‘Angels in America’
Penn State Centre Stage will present “Angels in America,” the Tony Kushner play that is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. This contemporary play tackles Reaganism, McCarthyism, immigration, religion, climate change and more against the backdrop of New York City in the mid ‘80s. It will run from Tuesday to March 5 at. High school choral invitational
Six high school choirs will join forces Saturday for a high school choral invitational in honor of Black History Month. The participating ensembles include the State College Area High School MasterSingers, choirs from three high schools in Pennsylvania, one from Florida and one from Maryland. The concert will run from 2-4 p.m. at the State College Area High School, and admission is free. More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
Sweetheart Owl Prowl
The Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center will offer a “Sweetheart Owl Prowl” on Saturday that includes a slideshow discussing owls’ habits followed by a trip outdoors to call for owls in the wild. Participants are encouraged to dress for warm weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight. The event will run from 6-8 p.m. Pre-registration at https://www.shaverscreek.org/public-programs-and-events/ is required, and the cost is $5 per person.
Apollo’s Fire
Apollo’s Fire, The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, will perform animated versions of Antonio Vivaldi’s concertos Thursday at a concert entitled “Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Rediscovered.” Complete with dueling cellos and sound effects to match the music, the performance will be interspersed with “tours” of the effect to be featured in each concerto by the artistic director of Apollo’s Fire, Jeannette Sorrell. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Schwab Auditorium, and tickets can be purchased at https://cpa.psu.edu/.
