Community members to show off their ‘Moxie’

The State Theatre, in anticipation of the Centre Gives annual fundraising event, will host its first Moxie: A Talent Showcase at the State College Municipal Building on April 30. The showcase will feature more than a dozen performers, from spoken word artists to stand-up comedians and musicians.

The Moxie talent showcase came together under the supervision of Morgan Ceschini, project development intern, and Alex Neal, marketing manager at The State Theatre. The event is sponsored by Webster’s Cafe, 90.7 FM The Lion, Penn State W.O.R.D.S. and Alley Cat Music.

“We chose to do a talent showcase because the basis of The State Theatre is entertainment and we’ve never done a talent showcase before,” Neal said.

Both Ceschini and Neal have worked on the showcase since January, and hope that it will gather support around the Centre Gives fundraising event.

Centre Gives is a 36-hour online event in which donations to the Centre Foundation are given directly to participating charitable organizations in Centre County. In addition to individual donations, the Centre Foundation also provides a stretch pool fund and cash prizes for participating organizations. Centre Gives will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, and will benefit more than 100 charitable organizations in the county.

In addition to hoping the showcase will gather support for Centre Gives, Ceschini also said her goal is to bridge the gap between the community in State College and the Penn State student body.

“Although this is a college town, I feel like not enough students know about the community itself. I wanted to do something that connected the two,” said Ceschini, who is a Pittsburgh native and a senior at Penn State studying communications media studies.

All performers were asked to submit a video in an online competition.

According to a press release, the vision is to build a large community event centralized in downtown State College. The State Theatre hopes the talent showcase will become an annual event.

The State Theatre will also host a photo booth and a silent auction in addition to the talent showcase. The event will include food trucks and the showing of a tiny house by the State College Land Trust.
