Here’s what to know about the changes coming to Centre County’s electronics recycling program
Ten years ago, I wrote a column explaining Pennsylvania’s Act 108 of 2010; The Covered Device Recycling Act. This Act banned all “covered devices” from landfills. Covered devices are items such as desktop computers, monitors, laptops, computer peripherals and televisions.
Over the past decade, the Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority has gone above and beyond the Act accepting just about all electronics for recycling. We went as far to say we would accept “anything with a plug” for recycling.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have had to make some changes to our Electronics Recycling Program. We can no longer accept “anything with a plug” for recycling and are now limited to accepting only the following items for recycling at our facility:
- Desktop, laptop and server computers
- Cellphones/PDAs
- TVs and monitors (CRT/LCD/LED/Plasma/flat screen)
- Desktop printers
- Desktop copiers
- UPS systems/battery backups
- Computer peripherals (keyboards, mice, speakers, etc.)
- PC peripherals and components (external/internal drives/PC cards/hubs)
- Cables/wiring
The electronic items listed above, and only the electronic items listed above, can be recycled at the Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority. We will gladly accept any of the items listed above, free of charge, at our facility for recycling. If you have an electronic item to get rid of that is not on the list above, you may throw it in your regular trash.
If you have one or more of the items listed above to recycle, please bring it to our facility, located at 253 Transfer Road and follow signs to the scale. Our scale operator will direct you to our Electronics Recycling Building where any of the items above may be dropped off for free.
The Electronics Recycling Building is open during our regular operating hours which are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. All accepted covered devices from Centre County residents may be dropped off free of charge. Commercial businesses should contact our office for rates.
The Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority is dedicated to collecting and recycling electronics. Since we opened our permanent facility we have collected and recycled over 2,800 tons of electronics.
We thank everyone for recycling their electronics at our facility. To make it easy on our staff and on our residents, please check to make sure you have an acceptable electronic item before bringing it to our facility.
Have a wonderful holiday season!
