This week in history: Penn State police introduce bikes to patrol

50 years ago
Bellefonte officials gathered June 21, 1967, at South Spring and West Bishop streets for a ribbon cutting of a new off-street parking lot.
“This is just the beginning of a program to provide convenient parking for visitors to Bellefonte’s downtown shopping area,” Mayor G.M. McCrossin said.
25 years ago
Five Penn State police officers started using mountain bikes to patrol the campus and enforce rules. It cost the department just more than $2,000 to get the patrol operating, according to a CDT article. The Bicycle Shop on West College Avenue helped train the officers.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held June 20, 2007, for Dairy Queen Grill & Chill at 310 W. Aaron Drive in State College. Owner Don Boller had closed his original Dairy Queen at 2009 N. Atherton St. the previous August after 42 years.
