This week in history: Area’s 1st Make-A-Wish kid receives a swimming pool

50 years ago

In October 1967, Pennsylvania Gov. Raymond Shafer signed a cigarette tax bill that raised the state tax on a pack of cigarettes from 8 to 13 cents. The increase was expected to yield an estimated $55 million over the rest of the fiscal year.

25 years ago

In October 1992, a 13-year-old girl from Zion named Jessica Hoy flew halfway across the country for a bone marrow transplant. Diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, Hoy became the area’s first Make-A-Wish child when she was gifted a swimming pool.

10 years ago

In October 2007, Schlow Centre Region Library replaced the Centre County Library in Bellefonte as the hub for public library facilities within Centre, Clearfield, Mifflin and Juniata counties.
