All about a cow's patterns
Contrary to popular belief, every cow's pattern is not exactly the same.
In fact, the Dairy Alliance reports that now two cows will have the same patterns, and, much like a human fingerprint, cow patterns vary by species and animal, making it easier for farmers to tell them apart.
According to AZ Animals, a calf's spots depend on several factors, but its breed can determine "the color, placement, and density of its spots." So while most cows are best known to have the classic black-and-white spots, they can have an infinite variation of spots, patterns, and colors.
Beef cattle, for example, can vary in colors, including yellow, brown, black, white, gray, or red.
While mom and calf may look identical, it's the minute variations in their patterns and coat colors that make them truly unique from one another.
