Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick Are Returning to Theatres for One Week Only-Here's How to Get Tickets
Captain Maverick will feel the speed again next month!
Tom Cruise announced on Instagram that Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are returning to theatres worldwide for one week only from May 13. The rerelease coincides with 40 years since the original film's release.
Although specific format details haven't been officially confirmed, a quick check of cinema websites reveals the films will screen in IMAX and 4DX alongside standard formats.
The timing coincided with the announcement of Top Gun 3 being officially in the making. Paramount reported the news at Cinemacon and added that Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are both set to return. It's the first update since 2024 when it was confirmed that a sequel was being written by Maverick's team: Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Mission: Impossible's Christopher McQuarrie. No release date has been announced yet.
Director Joseph Kosinski has been quietly dropping hints about the sequel. When speaking to reporters on the F1 press circuit, he mentioned that the team had found a story for the third film. However, while it was assumed that Top Gun 3 would hand the baton to Miles Teller and Glen Powell, Kosinski made clear that Cruise's role isn't done yet. "There's one last ride," he told British GQ.
It's worth remembering what Maverick meant for cinema. The film is widely credited with helping revive the theatrical experience post-COVID after Cruise urged Paramount to push the release instead of moving it to streaming. The film ended up grossing over $1.49 million worldwide.
