Valley Forge Rev Run raises $100,000 to benefit historic park

VALLEY FORGE - Runners and walkers raised more than $100,000 for the Valley Forge National Historical Park as part of the 20th annual Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-Mile Run, officials said Monday.

Hosted by the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board, Sunday's race that has become a mainstay over the past two decades had more than 1,500 participants from 23 states and the Netherlands come out for a good cause, according to county tourism officials.

"I'm so proud of how this race has grown into a favorite within our community-where community remains the heart of it all," Race Director Kirsten Tallman said in a statement. "As we celebrate 20 years, this truly feels like a historic year on all fronts and a reflection of just how much the event has grown over time."

The Rev Run featured a 5-mile race and 2-mile walk, according to county tourism officials, who noted several sponsorships, including Highmark and the Norristown-based Elmwood Park Zoo.

Organizers underscored the importance of runners, walkers and community members' contributions that led to the record-breaking donation, which is expected to cover shuttle services throughout July 4 weekend, provide operational support for the park's 50th anniversary festivities and fund ongoing Historic Philadelphia Inc. programming this summer, according to county tourism officials, who stress 100 percent of race proceeds benefit the park.

Participants have raised around $800,000 since the Rev Run's inception in 2006, which has aided park officials in improvements to park infrastructure and overall visitor experience. Additional event activities including vendors, an artist as well as food and beverage trucks for attendees. Race participants received either a finisher medal, a walk challenge coin and a t-shirt commemorating the race's 20th anniversary. The race also featured cash prizes "with a purse totaling $1,400" for the race's top three female and male winners.

"There's a deep appreciation for the Park and seeing everyone come together in one place on race day to celebrate is truly a powerful and moving experience," Tallman said in a statement. "Each year, the race continues to evolve, offering a meaningful opportunity for stewardship and connection to the park-just as it was designed to do 20 years ago."
