Blood In Blood Out Joins Hulu 33 Years After Box Office Disappointment
Taylor Hackford's underrated crime thriller Blood In Blood Out is finally coming to Hulu at the beginning of next month.
Originally released in 1993, Blood In Blood Out stars Jesse Borego, Benjamin Bratt, and Enrique Castillo in a story of crime and brotherhood that takes place in the seedy underworld of Los Angeles.
Blood In Blood Out follows three young relatives over many years, starting out as street gang initiates and ultimately climbing the ladder of organized crime until their strained friendship reaches a breaking point.
The film is a dark exploration of the sacrifices that are necessary to achieve success, and how the gang culture of Los Angeles exploits this to keep itself alive for generations. The title refers to the practice of young initiates having to kill somebody before they join a gang-and being bound by that choice until death.
Although Blood In Blood Out is now considered somewhat of a cult classic, the film wasn't always so successful. It barely pulled in $4.5 million in the United States and wasn't released internationally, marking a disappointing performance for Walt Disney Studios despite its impressively low budget.
However, the film was a big hit with critics-and has since been reclaimed by general audiences in recent years. The Los Angeles Times wrote in their review: "A riveting odyssey, rich with myth and unforgettable imagery. It is a feast of sight and sound--poetry, music, dance and emotion--and possibly one of the most powerful and important films of the decade."
Not all reviews were quite as strong, but Blood In Blood Out remained an admirable success story that didn't quite get the recognition it deserved at the box office. Particularly among the Mexican American community, Hackford's film has developed a cult following thanks to its raw, vulnerable, and gritty portrayal of the Los Angeles criminal world.
Blood In Blood Out will land on Hulu on May 1, 2026, alongside several other new releases and returning films. For those who can't wait that long, the film is also streaming on Disney+ and Amazon Prime with a relevant subscription.
