Puppy Mill Survivor Suffers Years Neglect-but There's a Heartwarming Twist

A puppy mill survivor is finally learning what it means to be loved after years of living in a cage, and a video documenting all his "firsts" has melted hearts across the internet.

For all his life, Pretzel the poodle had only known a life of neglect and isolation. He was discovered in a puppy mill in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he received no social interaction, poor treatment from humans, and was simply forced to breed litters. His age is unclear, as the breeder said Pretzel is 18 months old, but a vet estimates that he's between 5 to 7 years old.

Pretzel was rescued by Phoenix Animal Rescue and placed in a foster home until his story caught the attention of Sarah Pawlak of New Jersey. As soon as she learned about Pretzel's past, Pawlak, 31, knew she wanted to help, telling Newsweek that he "just needed a second chance."

Pretzel was in terrible shape when rescued, not just physically but also emotionally. He was severely underweight, his fur was matted and had to be sheared off, and he was missing 25 teeth.

"Pretzel wouldn’t stop shaking as he was kept in total isolation at the puppy mill, so everything was new to him," Pawlak said. "He seemed depressed and resigned, and there was absolutely no life in his eyes. We were told he broke his teeth chewing on the bars of his cage while at the puppy mill."

Following his adoption on February 16, Pretzel has already made great progress. It's taken a lot of love and patience on Pawlak's part, and she is also working with specialists to address Pretzel's separation anxiety. Animal behaviorists suggested that Pretzel has attached himself to Pawlak for safety and security as he gets "extremely worried" whenever she leaves the room.

Over the last few months, Pawlak has loved capturing so many of Pretzel's first experiences, including his first walk, first toy, first treat, and even the first time he slept in a bed.

Pawlak continued: "Before being rescued, Pretzel spent his entire life in a cage and had never seen the sky. His feet had never touched grass, and he'd never seen snow. We got to see him bark, wag his tail and snuggle for the first time. I will never forget the first time he discovered his tail, and he was chasing it for such a long time."

It's been such a heartwarming experience for Pawlak to see the progress Pretzel has made. She shared a clip on TikTok (@sarah_valentia) documenting his adoption journey so far, including footage from the first time he was given treats and his first toys. The video has melted so many hearts in just a matter of days, amassing over 26,800 views and 3,800 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.

The online response has been incredibly supportive, and Pawlak hopes it will educate people on the realities of puppy mills. Pretzel's life may look different now, but there are many dogs just like him in need of a loving home.

Pawlak told Newsweek: "The outpouring of support for Pretzel has been so heartwarming, and I am so touched by it. He is such a special dog, to be able to learn to trust again even after the horrors he has lived through.

"It is important to research when getting a dog so you do not unknowingly partake in animal cruelty. Thousands of dogs in puppy mills live in terrible conditions and are disposed of when no longer of use. They live lives of isolation and neglect, and though we have a long road ahead of us, we will help Pretzel through it."
