New AHN urgent care clinic to join growing cluster of clinics in competitive Westmoreland County
Westmoreland County is becoming a health care hot spot as a newcomer health system prepares to enter the market east of Pittsburgh.
Allegheny Health Network will open an urgent care center in Westmoreland County July 1. The new site will add to the growing cluster of walk-in clinics operated there by UPMC - AHN's biggest competitor - as a third provider, as Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine, prepares to enter the Pittsburgh-area health care market.
AHN's Express Care will begin next month at AHN Primary Care - Westmoreland at Nature Park Road in Greensburg, minutes from two UPMC–GoHealth Urgent Care centers. The AHN clinics will have expanded hours seven days a week, and appointments are not needed.
UPMC partnered with Atlanta-based GoHealth Urgent Care last year to operate urgent care clinics in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, including five offices along the Route 30 corridor in Westmoreland County.
In February, UPMC expanded spine care services at its UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care Center at 5126 Route 30 with the addition of three orthopedic spine surgeons, one neurosurgeon and a pain medicine specialist.
Urgent care clinics offer medical services for muscle strains, flu, allergies and other minor medical issues while drawing patients to more sophisticated, and higher margin, medical care at the big medical systems that own the clinics.
AHN's new urgent care clinic comes as WVU Medicine prepares to affiliate with Independence Health System, which operates five hospitals, including three in Westmoreland County. IHS also owns hospitals in Butler and Clarion County.
The WVU Medicine/IHS deal is expected to close in the fall.
AHN's urgent care center in Westmoreland County is part of a larger expansion of walk-in care for minor medical problems throughout its footprint.
That includes AHN Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion in Canonsburg, opening June 1. In the coming months, express care will be offered at AHN Primary Care offices in Jefferson Hills, Monroeville and Union City, Erie County.
