AHN plans new hospital in Washington County
Allegheny Health Network will replace its 104-bed hospital in Canonsburg with a new hospital in Cecil.
The Highmark Health affiliate hospital system on Thursday announced that it would break ground on a 150,000-square-foot facility at the Southpointe II business park in early 2027, pending regulatory review.
The 10-acre site at the intersection of Town Center Way and Mylan Boulevard where the hospital will be built overlooks Interstate 79, a busy highway linking Allegheny County and the fast growing communities in Washington County.
"For more than a century Canonsburg Hospital and its dedicated caregivers have provided this community with exceptional health care services and that legacy is foundational to our vision for this beautiful new facility and the critical role it will play in improving the health and wellness of our patients," AHN President Mark Sevco said in a prepared statement.
AHN Canonsburg was established in 1904 and has operated at its current Medical Boulevard location since 1983.
AHN cited Washington County's population growth as among the reasons the site was chosen: the population of Cecil, Chartiers, Strabane and Peters have grown as much as 12% over the past decade. Continued population growth in the region was anticipated.
In 2023, AHN announced plans to reconstruct Canonsburg Hospital with a 300,000-square-foot replacement. The anticipated opening of the $232 million facility was 2027.
Since then, the health system reconsidered its reconstruction plans, opting instead to build a hospital nearby about half the original size that had been planned.
The new AHN hospital will be about 10 miles from UPMC Washington Hospital, which the AHN competitor and hospital system giant acquired along with a smaller hospital in Greene County in 2024.
