Curbside recycling is back after a hiatus due to COVID-19. Here are safety guidelines to follow

As you all know, we had to suspend our curbside recycling operation for about a month due to concerns with COVID-19, but have since resumed our service as of April 27. When we resumed, we added some guidelines to help to keep our workers and residents safe.

Curbside recycling guidelines

Our curbside recycling guidelines as of April 27 are as follows:

  • If someone in your household has been sick, is quarantined or has tested positive for COVID-19, please hold your recycling at home for one week before placing it at the curb.

  • Protect yourself, your neighbors and our community. Do not place possibly contaminated items at the curb.

We also included trash guidelines to help our trash haulers. Our guidelines for trash (not recycling): All trash should be bagged prior to being placed inside or next to your trash can. Bags should be tied or closed to prevent trash from falling out.

To help get the message out even further, our crew placed green flyers in each curbside recycling bin after it was picked up for the first time after April 27.

Curbside recycling tips and reminders

When we resumed curbside recycling, I thought “What a perfect time to remind everyone on how to recycle properly at the curb!” Our curbside recycling tips and reminders are as follows:

  • Make sure your bin is out by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Bag/bundle your mixed paper/paperboard/shredded paper so it does not blow out of your bin or out of our trucks.
  • Do not place miscellaneous plastics (yogurt containers, clamshell containers, wide mouth containers, etc.) in your curbside bin. We have six drop-off locations for these materials. The only plastics accepted in your curbside in are plastic bottles, jugs and jars.
  • Rinse your plastic, metal and glass food and drink items before placing in bin.

I hope these tips and reminders help. Recycling done right helps our crew to move efficiently and effectively from house to house.

Everyone at the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority has been overwhelmed by the kind words and thank yous from our residents. We know this is a tough time for everyone and receiving so many nice emails, phone calls, thank-you posters and other kind gestures has really kept our spirits up! We thank you for that.

Please be safe and stay healthy and as always, thank you for recycling!
