Recycling: Rewards contest, Earth Fest & more spring events to mark on your calendar

Hooray, it’s the first day of spring! You can celebrate this beautiful time of year by attending some local earth-friendly events. I have listed some spring events below along with a description of each. Check them out and be sure to take advantage of as many as possible.

Recycled Art Show — Art Alliance of Central PA, April 22-24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Stop by the Art Alliance’s Downtown Gallery, April 22-24, to peruse pieces from the Recycled Art Show. The theme this for this year’s show is “Signposts.” The Downtown Gallery is located at 123 S. Fraser St. Local recycled pieces will be on display for art lovers to view and vote for their favorites. Select pieces from the show will be moved to the Authority’s Interpretive Center during the month of May for display.

Watershed Clean Up Day — April 23, 8 a.m.-noon

This year marks the 26th year for ClearWater Conservancy’s Watershed Cleanup Day! Since 1997, volunteers have prevented more than 6 million pounds of trash from entering our local waterways, and with your help, we’ll make a big difference this year too! Visit www.clearwaterconservancy.org/wcd for event details and for information on how to volunteer.

Earth Fest — April 24, Millbrook Marsh, 1-5 p.m.

In the spirit of Earth Day, come celebrate Mother Earth! Spend the afternoon outdoors exploring displays from environmental organizations, participating in activities and games, visiting local vendors, and enjoying local entertainment. This event is great for all ages and fun for the whole family! The event is free and donations are appreciated. Registration is not required.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event — April 29-30, CCRRA, 253 Transfer Road, College Township

Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority’s HHW Collection Event will be held on April 29-30. Pre-registration is required. Visit www.centrecountyrecycles.org/hazardouswastecollection for more information and to register. As always, this is a free event.

Acceptable items, from households only, include oil-based paints, insecticides, toxic chemicals, cleaners, CFL bulbs, fluorescent tubes, flammables and more.

Do not bring latex paint, motor oil, antifreeze, medications, explosives or alkaline batteries to the event. Contact CCRRA at ccrra@centrecountyrecycles.org or 814-238-7005 for questions regarding the collection event.

Recycling Rewards Contest — During the month of May

This May, the CCRRA is celebrating our 50th anniversary. To commemorate this historic milestone, we are randomly giving away $50 gift cards to 50 residents who put out perfect curbside recycling bins on their recycling day. Throughout the month of May, CCRRA staff will follow curbside recycling trucks and randomly check curbside bins along recycling routes. If the selected curbside bin is prepared perfectly, that resident will receive a $50 gift card in the mail for their efforts. Remember, you can only win if you put out your bin and recycle right! See our guide to curbside recycling here: www.centrecountyrecycles.org/curbsiderecycling.

If you have questions about recycling, please give me a call at 814-238-7005 or send me an email at aschirf@centrecountyrecycles.org. As always, thank you for recycling!
