Cruise itineraries that include overnight stays in port are popular with cruise passengers who crave more time to explore destinations than the typical cruise offers.

When a cruise ship stays overnight in a port, passengers get extended time on land - often two full days to experience a destination. Sometimes, overnights even include the chance to stay ashore after dark to experience a city's nightlife and see another side of a destination that cruise stops don't typically allow.

When it comes to Carnival cruise itineraries, overnight stays in port aren't common in the Caribbean, but a number of the cruise line's Mexican Riviera sailings from Los Angeles include two days in popular Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

If your Carnival cruise itinerary includes two days in Cabo or an overnight stay in another port, there are a couple of important things to note as you plan to make the most of your extended time ashore. Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, shared some helpful information and a key warning about overnight port stays in a Facebook post after receiving a question about the cruise line's policies for these extended port visits.

Carnival allows passengers to stay overnight on land during two-day port stops

In an April 18 Facebook post, Heald shared a message from a passenger named Delia who wrote to him with a question about Carnival cruise itineraries that include two days in Cabo San Lucas.

Delia wanted to know if Carnival allows passengers to stay at a hotel or resort for their overnight in Cabo San Lucas, or if passengers are required to return to the ship for the overnight hours between their two days in port.

Heald confirmed that staying ashore overnight is allowed, but passengers are required to notify Carnival ahead of time of their plans to do this.

"Now, you can stay in Cabo overnight. You need to let our Guest Services team know that you're going to do this 24 hours before the arrival into Cabo," Heald said.

He also pointed out something that passengers will want to consider before deciding to stay ashore overnight in Cabo or any other overnight port that uses a tender service to shuttle passengers to shore.

Overnight stays in tender ports come with extra considerations

If you're thinking about staying ashore overnight in a tender port, you may want to think again, Heald warned. He explained that there's always a chance that weather and sea conditions could become unfavorable overnight, which would prevent tender operations between the port and the ship on the second day.

"Secondly and most importantly, can I say this. Because we use a tender service to get our guests into Cabo San Lucas this may not be possible to do on the second day if the weather and sea conditions mean that it is unsafe to operate those boats," Heald warned.

If you don't return to the ship before tender operations end on the first day in port, and then tendering has to be canceled on the second day, you'd have no way to get back to the ship.

"This would mean that your cruise would effectively be over and you would have to be responsible for finding your way home. I would hate for that to happen to you or to anyone," Heald said in response to Delia's message.

For that reason, staying ashore overnight in a tender port, probably isn't worth the risk.
