A hot new trend is taking over cruise packing lists in summer 2026

As another summer of record-breaking heat settles over the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and even the U.K., cruise passengers are rewriting the rules for what goes into suitcases for summer sailings.

Many seasoned cruisers are trading fashionable resort wear for more lightweight, breathable, and UPF-rated sun protective clothing to survive port days under the scorching sun. But clothing isn't the only thing cruise passengers are rethinking as they pack for summer cruises to sun-baked destinations.

For many who have suffered under the summer heat on a cruise ship before, one travel item that new cruisers often overlook has become a must-have for staying cool in a cruise cabin.

With no ceiling fans and ship air conditioning that may not get as cool as some would like, cruise ship cabins can sometimes feel warm and stuffy on sweltering summer days. If you're sailing in a balcony cabin, temperatures can creep up quickly since outdoor heat often radiates in through the balcony door.

If you don't plan ahead for how to combat the summer heat in your cruise cabin, you might find yourself struggling to cool down after a day in port or tossing and turning at night if you're used to sleeping in an icy cold room. But the hottest packing hack in cruising today can help.

Packing a fan for a cruise is now a must for many

For many cruisers who like a cold room, cranking the air conditioning and keeping the balcony curtain closed during the day to block the sun aren't enough to get their cabin to their ideal conditions.

For heat-conscious cruisers, bringing a portable fan on board to increase the airflow in their cabin has become the hottest cruise packing hack in 2026. Most cruise lines, like Carnival and Royal Caribbean, permit passengers to bring their own electric fans on board, as long as they're under about 12 inches in diameter.

As temperatures rise, Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, is fielding a lot of questions about fans on his popular Facebook page that's followed by more than 670,000 cruisers. Heald advises passengers to plan ahead and bring their own if they think they'll want a fan for their cabin, because the increased interest in fans means that ships don't have enough to accommodate everyone who asks for one.

"People have also written and said that their cabin attendant would not provide them with a fan. It's not that they refused but because we only provide fans for unforeseen circumstances or for medical reasons. If you think you need a fan (and most do not) then please, this summer, do bring your own," Heald told Carnival cruisers in a June 22 Facebook post.

What type of fan is best to take on a cruise?

More than 2,000 comments on Heald's latest post about fans leave no room for doubt that portable fans are becoming one of the most popular travel items to bring on a cruise.

Many Carnival cruisers say inexpensive rechargeable travel fans purchased on Amazon are easy to pack and work well for their cruise needs at night and around the ship.

"Amazon has small fans that are rechargeable. You can also bring them to the pool and clip them to your lounge chair. Three speeds. They're great," Pamela Henderson commented.

Some cruisers are even splurging for more sophisticated models.

"I bought a Venty fan for this past cruise. It is adjustable height and rechargeable or you can leave it plugged into the USB charger next to the bed. It will run all night for two nights on a charge," Deborah Bass O'Brien shared.

While various fan options suit cruise travelers' needs, Carnival cruisers should keep in mind that for safety reasons, the cruise line warns against hanging portable fans from your cabin ceiling.
