Public swimming pools opening for the season
As temperatures heat up and summer nears, community swimming pools in the Valley are preparing to open for another season.
Despite rain and cooler temperatures forecast for this weekend, Selinsgrove Community Pool, 30 Linda Lane, is scheduled to be open noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, Sunday, May 24, and Monday, May 25, with free admission Memorial Day.
The pool will close for the following three days and reopen for the season on Friday, May 29. There is a $6 general admission fee and children 5 and under are free.
Managed by Selinsgrove Area Recreation Inc., the swimming pool will have 18 returning lifeguards and another seven aspiring lifeguards currently taking certification classes, board President Richard Mease said.
The facility will offer free swimming lessons to anyone interested on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration beginning Saturday, courtesy of a $5,000 donation from Penn Fire Protection. Private lessons will also be offered at a cost of $40.
The Sunbury Community Pool at 249 Memorial Drive in Northumberland County will open Monday, June 1, with general admission of $6. Children aged 5 and under are free.
The pool has gone through upgrades over the past few years, according to Sunbury Councilman Jim Eister.
Eister, who is in charge of parks and recreation, said he is excited for another successful season.
"We are all looking forward to the warm weather and seeing everyone come out to the pool," he said. "We always have something going on and it's great to see so many families come out and take advantage of the pool and enjoy themselves."
Eister said the pool runs promotions throughout the year as "pop-up" sponsors pay for a certain number of tickets, and people have the chance to enter for free when they arrive during the random draws. If interested in becoming a sponsor, call City Hall at 570-286-7820.
The Lewisburg Community Pool, N. 15th St., in Union County, plans to open Saturday, May 30, immediately following the triathlon hosted by Rise Up Racing. Several food trucks will be on the premises and the pool concession stand will be open. General admission is $5.
Middleburg and Mifflinburg community pools, which are being operated under the management of the Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA, will also open at noon Saturday, May 30.
The general admission for the Middleburg pool, located at 72 Golf Course Road in Snyder County, is $10. The regular season pool hours for the Middleburg pool will be 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The regular hours at the Mifflinburg pool, 131 N 5th St., beginning June 2, will be noon to 6 p.m. through Aug. 16. General admission is $3 and children 5 and under are free with a paying adult.
Exchange Pool at 1373 Whitehall Road, Turbotville, in Montour County, is tentatively scheduled to open at 12:30 p.m. June 6. General admission is $6 for children 17 and under and $7 for adults.
Sunnybrook Park and Pool, 44 Jerseytown Road, Danville, in Montour County, will open at noon June 6, with a $6 general admission.
McClure Veterans Memorial Pool, 32 E. Ohio St. in Snyder County, is the only public swimming pool in the Valley that offers free admission. The 76-year-old facility is scheduled to open the second week of June, a delay caused by the need to repair a cracked 12-inch main connected to the pump house, said pool board President Adam Ewig.
The McClure pool has adequate staffing, including lifeguards who are paid $15 an hour, he said.
"We always continue to rely on community support and on concession stand sales," Ewig said.
Operating hours at each public facility are subject to the weather. For more information about season passes, programs and other events, visit the community pools' websites or Facebook pages.
