Westmont hires Aspen Mock as new assistant high school principal, approves RACP change orders

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Westmont Hilltop School District board hired a new assistant high school principal at Thursday's meeting.

Aspen Mock was selected to fill the role with a salary of $85,000.

"This opportunity presented itself and I felt it would be a good fit for my skill set," Mock said.

She has had her principal certification since earning a doctorate in educational leadership and administration.

Mock has spent the past 16 years at Forest Hills High School teaching in the English department, and a total of 17 years in education. She said she will miss the classroom, but felt it was time to take the next step in her career.

Mock is looking forward to working with Westmont's administrative team, students, teachers and community in her new role, she said.

In other business, the board approved a series of change orders through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. Westmont Hilltop was approved for up to $2 million in renovations to the elementary and high school buildings.

Change orders approved for the elementary school, at the district's request, included a wall tile replacement for $18,738, a drywall fix for $3,441 and bathroom drywall replacement under tile for $7,740.

At the high school, the change orders totaled more than $70,000 and ranged from replacing railings and repointing brick work to HVAC updates and electrical improvements.

Business Manager Jacklyn Hanik said these adjustments are still within the scope of the original approval.

Related to the work, Westmont Hilltop approved Hanik to transfer $1.2 million to the capital reserve fund as bridge funding for the RACP and capital projects work.

She said that the redevelopment program is reimbursement-based, which means Westmont Hilltop must spend the money and receive credit for the undertaking. Thankfully, Hanik said, the district can cover the expenses now and receive payment for the work later.

The district passed its final budget without a tax increase Thursday as well. Revenues are estimated at $28.3 million and expenses are projected at $29.1 million.
