Goodwill plans to change State College locations

Goodwill’s plan to close its State College location and reopen in College Township is still moving forward, but the thrift and consignment chain offered Monday an updated timeline.

The nonprofit, which has operated in Happy Valley for about four decades, hopes to complete the swap by mid-October, Goodwill’s North-Central Pennsylvania President and CEO Raymond Donati said.

“This really solidifies our stance of being in the State College community,” Donati said. “We feel very strongly about providing not only the retail operation, but also the programs that we provide for job training and preparation. We intend to expand that and look forward to a longtime relationship in the State College area.”

Goodwill plans to move from 424 Westerly Parkway to 387 Benner Pike, the former home of Office Depot. The building has been vacant since January 2016.

Negotiations for the 35,700-square-foot building were ongoing for at least two years. The haggling ended when Goodwill purchased the building in July, Donati said.

No jobs are expected to be cut when the move is complete. Several positions remain open and the store is accepting applications, Donati said.
