State College restaurant still closed a month after inspector found 20 health code violations
Aug. 26, 2022 update: A follow-up inspection Aug. 18 by health technician Brian O’Donnell found the eatery at 131 W. Beaver Ave. “has corrected the critical violations and structural building violations and may reopen to the public.”
Green Bowl remained closed Monday more than a month after a health inspection found 20 violations at the downtown State College restaurant.
Health technician Brian O’Donnell noted in his three-page report there was “floor damage which may be a safety hazard to the structure of the building” and Centre Region codes officials would be notified.
A citation was filed against the business at 131 W. Beaver Ave. after the May 4 inspection.
The restaurant was also cited for keeping both hot and cold foods at improper temperatures.
Some of the other violations noted by O’Donnell were:
- Food items stored directly on the floor and behind the service counter, rather than 6 inches off the floor as required
- Self-serve water and ice display did not have sneeze guards or lids
- Ice machine missing condenser cover and ice compartment exposed to dirt and dust
- Walk-in cooler not keeping foods at the proper temperature
- Condiments not protected from contamination by use of dispensers or suitable utensils
- Drain lines of grill and under grill are clogged and do not allow for proper cleaning of the grill
- Floor drain in kitchen clogged with grease
- No sign posted at the sink in the grill area to remind employees to wash their hands
All violations are to be corrected before the restaurant reopens, the report notes, and a random inspection will be conducted after reopening to ensure the restaurant is in compliance.
A representative from Green Bowl could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday. A State College borough spokesperson said Tuesday that health officials have not been given a time frame of when the restaurant plans to remedy the violations or reopen.
