Pizza shop closes in downtown State College, doesn’t rule out reopening elsewhere
A downtown State College pizza shop closed Friday after 2 1/2 years in business.
Weirdoughs Custom Pizzeria, 204 E. College Ave., saw its last day come and go after its lease was terminated, owner Joseph Boss said. About six years were left on the pact, he said.
“It was not our decision to leave,” Boss said.
Weirdoughs opened in September 2020 in the longtime home of Brother’s Pizza. The shop also sold salads, calzones and dessert pizzas.
Sixteen people were employed at the business as of Friday. All of them are Penn State students, Boss said.
The verbose entrepreneur didn’t rule out a return to Happy Valley, saying he would “110% welcome an opportunity to be back in Penn State.” He even floated the idea of potentially reopening as a bar.
“State College is built on the locals. They’re the heartbeat of that town. When you take that away, it becomes a rest stop. It’s now just all franchises. It’s no longer what it used to be,” Boss said. “That’s what made Happy Valley so special; you’d go up there and you’d get to see things that no one else had. It’s changing now.”
He later added: “No one wants to see the guy in the Bentley give the homeless guy the finger.”
