Downtown State College eatery to close after 19 years. ‘Join us in celebrating the good times’
Are U Hungry, a downtown State College staple that opened in 2005, announced it will close its doors later this month.
In an Instagram post from Are U Hungry, the shop cited a number of reasons for closing, including staffing shortages, lingering effects of the pandemic and uncertainties about the Sowers Street building where they’re located.
“The continuous challenges of hiring and retaining staff and especially managers to operate our late-night hours, combined with the lingering complications from the pandemic, have made it increasingly difficult for us to continue providing the quality of service and experience that we pride ourselves on,” the post reads. “Furthermore, losing a partners along with the uncertainties surrounding our building over the last few years, and the impending expiration of our lease, have added to these challenges. Despite our best efforts to navigate these obstacles, the reality we face today has led us to this difficult decision.”
The business is known for its late hours and “Fat Sandwich” menu items.
This might not be a permanent farewell though, as the business owners are looking at options to potentially keep Are U Hungry in town, whether it be through new ownership, a different location or earlier hours.
“We hope that this is not a goodbye, but rather a pause, as we reflect on our journey and contemplate the future,” the business wrote.
The sandwich shop also offered its thanks to its customers and staff for the support it’s received.
“We are eternally grateful for your support over the last 19 years. Please join us in celebrating the good times we’ve shared during our final days of operation.”
The restaurant’s closure is effective Feb. 26. Until then, Are U Hungry will post its weekly hours and updates on its Instagram page.
