Downtown State College restaurant closes after more than 4 years in business

A downtown State College restaurant closed earlier this month after about 4 1/2 years in business.

BRGR, 122 W. College Ave., closed about one month after a local real estate company wrote in a court filing that the business defaulted on its lease and owed about $65,000 in unpaid rent.

A liquidation auction is planned for May 23. Everything from kitchen equipment and restaurant furnishings to storage and cleaning supplies are expected to be sold.

When the restaurant that specialized in gourmet hamburgers and handmade milkshakes opened in September 2019, it was one of several links in the BRGR chain and was the first outside of the Pittsburgh area. With the closing of its State College location, none remain.

The lease required the restaurant to pay $100,380 in rent per year for five years beginning in 2020. Rent was set to increase to $112,380 per year beginning in 2025.

Attorney Jim Cooney, who represented the business, told the Centre Daily Times on Friday that he does not expect any court hearing to be scheduled.

“We believe we have a resolution with the landlord to have the auction,” Cooney said.

BRGR is at least the second downtown State College restaurant to close recently. Jax Bar and Kitchen, 127 E. Calder Way, closed, but is in line to be renovated and rebranded, StateCollege.com reported. It’s unclear when the it plans to reopen.

Signs about an upcoming auction are posted on the doors to BRGR on College Avenue in downtown State College on Friday, May 10, 2024.
