Mifflin County bike shop is expanding with new State College store. ‘We’re very lucky’
A central Pennsylvania bicycle shop is expanding to Centre County with a new store along Benner Pike.
Two Brothers Bicycle Company will soon open at 1245 Benner Pike with a target date of Friday, Jan. 10. The Mifflin County-based bike shop will move next to the Hite Company near St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store and VCA Metzger Animal Hospital.
The shop, led by brothers Nick and Chris Johnston, plans to sell a wide range of bicycles, including mountain bikes and starter options for children. Two Brothers Bicycle Company’s inventory will also include bike parts, accessories, specialty clothing, helmets, repair kits and more.
Co-owner Chris Johnston hopes Two Brothers Bicycle Company will cater to the community no matter what riders in the area need.
“Our goal is to provide every rider with a superior customer experience,” he said. “Anywhere from the beginner to the veteran, we’re going to serve you all the way through. We don’t want to turn anyone away. We want anyone who’s interested in bikes to feel like they’re part of the community and that they’re a cyclist, too.”
Bike service and repair are key parts of the shop’s offerings. At its existing location in nearby Burnham, Two Brothers Bicycle Company already offers several tune-up packages that include brake alignments, deep cleanings and overall inspection starting at $89.99. A la carte services are also available for those in need of quick fixes, new parts, tire replacements and more. Riders can schedule service appointments and bike drop-off times online.
Two Brothers Bicycle Company’s current inventory features bikes from brands like Trek, Haro, and Santa Cruz, but the shop will accept service work for any bike.
“We’ll service any bike — not just the brands we carry,” Chris Johnston said. “Any bike is welcome here.”
Two Brothers Bicycle Company hosts a riding club in Burnham that matches riders with like-minded cyclists for trips on local trails, and plans are already in the works to get club events up and running in State College. Chris Johnston said he hopes the group will alternate between trails in Centre and Mifflin counties to keep things fresh and help riders explore the surrounding area.
“We just want to get people out and ride together, because that’s always more fun than riding alone,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of people who don’t know what’s truly available to them, and [central Pennsylvania] is phenomenal for biking compared to many other places. We’re very lucky.”
The Johnston brothers are no strangers to Centre County and central Pennsylvania at large. They grew up in Pennsylvania Furnace and first opened their own bike shop in Lewistown in 2020 before moving to a larger space in Burnham in 2021.
Moving forward, Chris plans to manage the new State College store, while Nick will manage the store in Burnham. Though their team is small, the brothers are hiring a service technician to work at the new State College store.
“We’re both very familiar with the area and the trails, and we know the riding community here is phenomenal,” Chris Johnston said. “We’re excited to be in Centre County.”
Though no ceremonies are officially planned for a grand opening in January, Chris Johnston expects Two Brothers Bicycle Company will host events in the spring with specialty vendors, demo bikes and more.
According to its website, Two Brothers Bicycle Company will run the same operating hours at its stores at 309 S. Logan Blvd. in Burnham and in State College. They are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Both stores are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Two Brothers Bicycle Company is the latest bike shop to make headlines in the State College area. Trek Bicycle opened a shop at 321 Benner Pike in February 2024, while Freeze Thaw Cycles is moving from South Allen Street in downtown State College to a larger space at 1400 W. College Ave.
