This salad & stir-fry chain is opening soon inside a State College high-rise

A fast-casual stir-fry and salad chain is set to open a new location in State College.

Honeygrow will open a restaurant at the bottom of the Pugh Centre apartment complex at 170 E. Beaver Ave., the chain announced Friday after signing its lease for the space. Though no date is set in stone yet, the Philadelphia-based chain said it expects to open in State College later this year.

Honeygrow’s opening in State College will mark the chain’s first restaurant near Penn State. That is a point of pride for founder and CEO Justin Rosenberg, who graduated from the university’s College of the Liberal Arts with a history degree.

“Opening in State College is a full-circle moment for me,” Rosenberg wrote in a statement. “My time at Penn State was a major and influential part of my life, and I’m incredibly excited to bring out brand back to a place that means so much to me. We’re proud to serve this community with food that’s fresh, wholesome and actually tastes really good!”

Honeygrow’s menu features a wide range of stir-fry dishes and salad bowls featuring garlic butter shrimp, serrano chili, garlic butter chicken and plenty of vegetarian options. Every salad and stir-fry dish is fully customizable to meet flavor preferences and dietary needs, the chain says.

No mention of Honeygrow’s menu would be complete without “honeybars,” the dessert bowls that usually feature fresh fruit, toppings and local honey. These are customizable, too, if menu-made flavors featuring brownie crumble, key lime cheesecake and apple pie don’t strike your fancy.

Honeygrow manages nearly 60 locations scattered throughout eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, New York, Delaware and Ohio. Today, the chain’s Pennsylvania locations closest to State College are in Lancaster and Reading.

“We’re excited to welcome Honeygrow to downtown State College,” said Greg Scott, president and CEO of the Chamber for Business and Industry of Centre County. “This is more than just a new dining option. It’s a sign of the growing interest from high-quality, purpose-driven brands in investing in our local economy. It speaks to the energy and opportunity here in Centre County.”

Rosenberg founded Honeygrow in 2012 after pitching the concept to investors nearly 100 times before landing a deal. He joined Invent Penn State’s “Dare to Disrupt” podcast in April 2024 to share the company’s story and discuss his time at Penn State.

Honeygrow marks the latest chain restaurant to join State College’s ever-growing lineup. Buffalo Wild Wings marks the latest high-profile opening, while plans are in the works to bring a new pizza shop, noodle restaurant and a Shaquille O’Neal fried chicken joint to other storefronts downtown later this year.
