State College liquor store will hold grand opening for new location. What to know
A new state-controlled liquor store is ready to open its doors in Centre County.
Fine Wine & Good Spirits will officially open a new State College shop at 1536 N. Atherton St. on Thursday, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board said. The new shop is located inside the same storefront that once housed the county’s last remaining Rite Aid.
The new store will celebrate its grand opening with a 1 p.m. ceremony featuring special discounts and product samples.
Customers can stop by the new North Atherton Fine Wine & Good Spirits and receive 10% off all-store sales of wines, spirits and accessories from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday. The store will also offer free product tastings for of-age customers between noon and 8 p.m., according to a media release.
The new liquor store opening at 1536 N. Atherton St. coincides with the closing of State College’s existing store up the road at 1682 N. Atherton St. When it unveiled plans for the new store, the PLCB said the new location should be more convenient for customers.
“This new FW&GS Premium Collection offers consumers an expanded shopping experience with a new floor plan, warm and welcoming environment and greater selection,” the PLCB wrote in a statement.
For now, it’s unclear if the PLCB moved workers from the closing store to its new shop. Agency press secretary Shawn Kelly said last winter that employees from closing stores are “usually” moved to new shops, but their retention is largely dependent on the needs of the new store.
The PLCB did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the new State College store.
Centre County is home to seven Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores, including four in State College. State-controlled liquor stores are available at the following addresses:
- 127 Southride Plaza in State College
- 230 W. Hamilton Ave. in State College
- 1536 N Atherton ST. in State College
- 323 Benner Pike in State College
- 178 Buckaroo Lane in Bellefonte
- 15 W. Olive St. in Snow Shoe
- 1067 N. Front St. in Philipsburg
The new North Atherton liquor store is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. Check out the online store locator to find daily hours for Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores near you.
