A new diner-style restaurant plans to open inside an iconic downtown State College property.

Bubba’s Eggs, Steaks & Shakes intends to open at 131 S. Garner St., the longtime home of Baby’s Burgers and Shakes. More recently, the property hosted a French diner for nearly three years before it closed this summer.

In a Facebook post in the locally popular “Foodies of State College” group, a Bubba’s team member wrote that the restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and provide diner-style ambiance.

“Keep up with us as we build this page and get open. We can’t wait to see you guys,” team member Brianna Stroh wrote on Facebook. “We’re bringing you a whole new level of breakfast, adding a lunch and dinner menu and bringing back that diner vibe with milkshakes.”

The exact menu Bubba’s will serve remains unclear. The restaurant’s predecessor, the Daily Grind in Altoona, served a wide range of specialty coffees and breakfast favorites like French toast and waffles.

The restaurant’s ownership team has not responded to requests for more information from the Centre Daily Times.

Bubba’s move to State College appears to coincide with the closure of the Daily Grind, which opened in October 2022. On Facebook, the Daily Grind thanked its customers for supporting the shop since its opening. Its phone number appears to have already been disconnected.

“As our journey at the Daily Grind has come to an end, it’s time to spread our wings and move forward,” the post reads. “We’ve met so many great people along the way, and we can’t thank you enough. We hope to see some familiar faces in the near future.”

For now, it remains unclear when Bubba’s expects to open its doors in State College. Tentative plans to serve lunch and dinner seem to suggest the restaurant would remain open from the morning through the evening, but exact hours of operation are not available.

A sign posted in the restaurant’s window says it is currently hiring for all positions, according to a Facebook post Thursday. Interested applicants can inquire by calling 814-330-1841 or emailing bubbastroh@gmail.com.

More updates on Bubba’s operations may appear on its newly created Facebook page.

Once open, Bubba’s will continue a decades-long legacy of serving up diner favorites at the beloved Garner Street property.

The 1950s-themed Baby’s Burgers and Shakes opened in 1987 and closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. A few years later, award-winning chef Gillian Clark opened Oeuf Boeuf et Bacon, which served a French-inspired menu alongside her signature chicken and waffles and other diner fare. Citing personal health challenges and staffing issues, Clark closed the restaurant in July.
