A drive-thru coffee shop literally dropped into State College earlier this month.

Seven Brew Coffee has already assembled the base of what will become its first State College-area shop in College Township’s Hills Plaza shopping center. Crews helped settle a prefabricated building onto the parking lot site to speed up the construction process as the shop eyes a fall opening.

Working with modular buildings constructed in Missouri has helped Seven Brew quickly expand across the country and open new stores with ease, according to Matt Peters, the director of operations for Seven Brew’s Pennsylvania and northern Delaware locations.

“It comes in on a crane, we drop it in and, believe it or not, everything inside the building is completely done — the ceiling, the walls, the tables, the bathrooms and more,” Peters told the Centre Daily Times. “We’re kind of able to go from having nothing there to saying, ‘Holy crap, there’s a whole building there now.’”

Work on Seven Brew’s State College location is still in progress, Peters said. Though the building itself is largely complete, constructions crews must finish installing utility lines, equipment and other site work, including paving the shop’s trademark drive-thru lanes.

Seven Brew is targeting a mid-to-late November opening in State College, Peters said. That projection is fluid, he said, noting several factors — including hiring efforts and construction complications — could shift the opening date.

Peters said Seven Brew’s State College shop is projected to create at least 50 part-time jobs, though he expects that figure could rise to more than 70 or 80 jobs. The company tends to hire dozens of part-time workers while preparing to open its shops, which can employ nearly 20 people per shift on busy days.

“With these larger openings, what we’re seeing is we just physically need more people to help — whether that’s working toward opening or years after getting started,” Peters said. “It takes a lot of human capital to do what we do and open locations as fast as we open them, so we’re always looking for new people who want to grow with us.”

Nearly all Seven Brew workers are hired as baristas, though a good chunk of its employees spend the day taking orders at drive-thru lanes. Peters said the company often offers to move its workers to other locations or spots within the company if staffing becomes oversaturated.

Once open, State College’s Seven Brew location will offer hours from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Plans to construct a Seven Brew location in State College were first unveiled publicly when plans were presented to county officials in August 2024. Peters said the company has long viewed the area as a prime target for westward expansion in Pennsylvania.

“It’s a great market, and that’s undeniable. It’s a market we’ve been trying to get to,” Peters said. “We thought State College would be a good fit for the overall economics but also a positive light and business in the community to continue spreading joy and happiness and a different drive-thru experience no one else has seen.”

Seven Brew is known for its trademark drink-only menu and drive-thru ordering system that quickly serves customers. The company says its menu offers more than 20,000 unique combinations, including energy drinks, smoothies, shakes and teas.

State College’s Seven Brew will mark the eighth location in Pennsylvania, joining sites in DuBois, Carlisle and York, among other locales. The Arkansas-headquartered company has opened hundreds of shops in more than 30 states since launching in 2017.
