A State College shipment center is expected to close after more than 30 years in business.

The FedEx Ship Center at 2175 Fox Hill Road will permanently close on May 4, according to a notice sent to some area residents earlier this week. A company representative confirmed the closure and said another shipment center in Duncansville is also slated to cease operations.

Team members at the impacted facilities were notified of the closure months in advance, a FedEx representative said, and some workers may receive offers to move elsewhere in the company. FedEx did not provide final details on the number of employees impacted by the scheduled closure in State College.

“These decisions are never taken lightly and reflect our commitment to supporting affected employees — through job placement assistance, relocation aid or severance, as applicable — while transforming our network and continuing to provide an outstanding experience for customers,” a spokesperson said.

Notably, FedEx’s Office Print & Ship Center at 1894 N. Atherton St. will remain in operation.

The closure of State College’s FedEx Ship Center will result in a “significant” loss of revenue for the State College Regional Airport, according to interim executive director Ralph Stewart. The airport owns the property and has maintained a ground lease arrangement with FedEx for decades.

Stewart said the airport will work to fill the vacancy left by FedEx’s closure as soon as possible.

“It’s unfortunate because a lot of businesses and residents of the area use that FedEx shipping center,” he said.

Stewart said FedEx’s upcoming closure is not thought to be related to the proposed change of ownership for the airport. Penn State trustees approved a resolution last week that would sell all operating assets of the State College Regional Airport to the Centre County Airport Authority, pending regulatory approval and other formalities.

FedEx moved to its longtime airport property along Fox Hill Road in 1991. At the time of its relocation, the space provided roughly three times as much space as its former facility along Benner Pike.

Until its closure, State College’s FedEx Ship Center is open from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The center is closed on Sundays.

The shipment center offers a wide range of in-store services, including package drop-offs, package holds, return shipping services and international deliveries. The center also sells packaging supplies and prints shipping labels.
