Ferguson Township police officer tests positive for coronavirus, the township says

A Ferguson Township police officer tested positive for the new coronavirus, the township announced Friday.

It is the first known case of a law enforcement officer testing positive for COVID-19 in Centre County.

The officer has been on leave for the past 16 days, is expected to make a full recovery and return to duty after consulting with their physician, the township said in statement.

There are no other confirmed cases in the police department or other staff, the township said.

Several municipal police departments, including Ferguson Township, implemented new procedures in March to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“Ferguson Township and the other municipal and regional law enforcement agencies have comprehensive mutual aid agreements in place to provide assistance to other jurisdictions when in need,” the township said. “While we do not anticipate needing to call on additional resources for assistance in patrol and other police activities, it is reassuring that assistance is available if needed.”
