A Centre County government employee has tested positive for the coronavirus, officials confirmed Friday.

This is the first case of COVID-19 among county government employees. Those who may have come in contact with the unidentified employee have been notified, county Administrator Margaret Gray said in a release.

“Our best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to this employee,” Commissioner Michael Pipe said in a statement. “Without question, the health and safety of our workforce is a top priority, and the county will continue its efforts to provide necessary protection for our employees and the visiting public.”

At the Centre County Correction Facility, no employees have tested positive for the virus, according to county data that was updated Friday morning. Six inmates at the Benner Township facility tested positive and six have recovered.

Centre County buildings remain closed to the public, but all government services are operational.

As of noon Friday, Centre County has had 138 confirmed COVID-19 cases since March 20. There have been five deaths since April 16.
