State College police to remove abandoned bicycles

If you’ve parked your bike in downtown State College for several days straight, you might want to move it soon.

State College police announced Thursday that many of the bicycle racks in the downtown area have become cluttered with abandoned bikes, making it difficult to utilize the racks. Starting Monday, police will be tagging bikes parked in the downtown area.

On Oct. 13, officers will be removing any bike that has not been checked on by the owner and it will be impounded, police said, and asked that any bikes parked in such a manner be checked on or removed as soon as possible.

Police reminded cyclists about the downtown parking regulations, saying a person may park on the sidewalk unless prohibited by an official traffic control device. Parking against windows or parking meters is not allowed, and cyclists may not chain a bike to any stop sign, parking sign or any other official sign, including trees in the the street rights-of-way in the borough.

Racks are to be used where available, police said. Bikes in racks along rights-of-way can only be stored for 72 hours, while racks in parking facilities are good for 30 days.
