If you like ice cream and doughnuts, you might love this new business
A new food concept that will combine two sweet treats into one is coming to State College.
Happy Buns owner Ohm Kongtang said patrons will get to choose from a variety of handcrafted ice cream and topping infused doughnuts.
“The doughnut is on the outside, and the ice cream is inside with its toppings,” Kongtang said. “We have a special machine that infuses it together, makes the doughnut bun warm and keeps the ice cream cold. It’s a brand new business model, so we aren’t competing with Dunkin, Peace, Love and Little Donuts or Duck Donuts.”
The doughnuts will be glazed or non-glazed. There will also be 16 flavors of ice cream and 12 toppings like Fruity Pebbles and Oreos. Customers may also order ice cream and toppings separately.
Kongtang got the idea for Happy Buns, which will likely open in February at 426 E. College Ave., after “traveling a lot” and experiencing different food concepts. He wants to make the location a hangout spot for families and college students. The business will hire about 10 employees.
“There’s nothing else like it here for the kids, and it’s a more modern, mainstream thing being brought to Happy Valley,” Kongtang said. “There aren’t too many cool, new things when you come to State College, so we hope this is a fun, vibrant new trend for the community. We’re looking forward to everyone experiencing it and hopefully getting good feedback.”
