Openings, closings and other Centre County business changes from February you may have missed
February brought news of several business openings and closings in Centre County. Here’s a look:
What’s new in town?
- Lock Bridal opened this month at 141 W. High St. in Bellefonte. The bridal shop’s owner, Lydia Shafer, also runs Lock Boutique, a women’s clothing retailer in Bellefonte.
- Curaleaf opened a medical marijuana dispensary at 1248 S. Atherton St. in State College, formerly the site of Citizens Bank. Curaleaf State College’s hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Shutting their doors
- Local nonprofit New Leaf Initiative closed its coworking space on the third floor of the State College Municipal Building. The borough plans to use the area for office space.
- Douglas Albert Gallery in downtown State College will close after more than four decades. Owner Douglas Albert said the landlord did not renew his lease, and he tentatively plans to shut the doors at 107 McAllister Alley on April 30.
Acquisition
AccuWeather has acquired environmental technology company Plume Labs. The Paris-based company provides air quality maps and data around the globe. With the acquisition, Plume will bring its air quality forecasts to the 1.5 billion people who are served by AccuWeather and expand its focus by applying AI technology to a wider range of environmental risks, such as climate and wildfires. This will also advance AccuWeather’s investments in AI for weather predictions, which the State College-based forecaster calls a “critical area of research” to improve the accuracy of forecasts in a changing climate.
