‘Moving in the right direction.’ Here’s a look at COVID-19 in Centre County and across PA
COVID-19 cases fell again this week in Centre County, as state officials struck an optimistic tone.
During the seven-day period Feb. 24-March 2, there were 161 new cases — 113 fewer than the previous week.
As of March 2, Centre County has reported a total of 34,772 cases (30,899 confirmed and 3,873 probable) along with 86,013 negative tests.
Seven county deaths were recorded this week to bring the total to 342.
Mount Nittany Medical Center was treating 20 COVID patients on March 1, the most recent dashboard update showed. They were between ages 31 and 100 and none were in intensive care or on ventilators. Eleven were not vaccinated.
Hospitalizations fluctuated between 14 and 16 during the week before climbing to 20 on March 1.

PA ‘moving in the right direction’
Cases also decreased statewide. From Feb. 21-27, the daily average number of cases across Pennsylvania was 1,565, the state Health Department said. The previous week’s daily average was 2,608.
“This week’s COVID-19 update continues to show that trends in Pennsylvania are moving in the right direction,” acting Health Secretary Keara Klinepeter said in a statement. “Case counts are at their lowest since last August, hospital admissions due to COVID-19 are falling, and mortality rates are declining.”
As of March 2, there have been a total of 2,759,398 cases and 6,072,606 negative tests.
There have been 43,421 deaths, an increase of 419.
The number of hospitalizations on Feb. 28 fell by 27% compared to the previous week.
Vaccine update
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 69.4% of the total Centre County population received at least one vaccine dose (last week’s figure: 69.2%) while 59.1% is fully vaccinated (last week: 58.9%). Of those who are fully vaccinated, 50.7% received a booster (last week: 50.4%).
As of Feb. 28, the CDC said, 76.5% of Pennsylvanians 18 and older are fully vaccinated (last week: 76.2%). Across the state (excluding Philadelphia), 72,750 vaccine doses were administered Feb. 21-27, the Health Department said.
