Allegiant Air ends flights from State College, more than 2 years after starting service
Allegiant Air has suspended service from State College, a spokesperson said Thursday. The last flight was on Sunday.
Allegiant spokeswoman Sonya Padgett said in an email that labor and demand constraints affecting the entire airline industry led to “the difficult decision to suspend our seasonal service at University Park Airport.”
“Our customers there have largely been students and their families who traveled to and from the area when classes were in session,” Padgett said. “Even though regular school activities have resumed, demand has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.”
The airline began offering flights from University Park Airport in October 2019 to two Florida destinations: Orlando/Sanford and Tampa/St. Petersburg.
The airline is still “highly committed to the area,” Padgett said, and serves Pennsylvania from Harrisburg, Allentown and Pittsburgh.
“We’re very excited to bring our brand of convenient, friendly service to State College with these two routes, and we’re very grateful for the partnership of Penn State University, as we have worked together over the years to reach this milestone,” Drew Wells, Allegiant vice president of planning and revenue, said in a press release at the time.
Airport Director Bryan Rodgers directed a request for comment to Penn State.
“Unfortunately, we have been alerted to this change in service for passengers flying out of the University Park Airport,” university spokeswoman Lisa Powers said in an email, and referred further comment to Allegiant.
The airport is now served by three airlines, with flights operated by Delta to Detroit, American to Philadelphia, and United to Newark and Chicago.
