Ready for Thanksgiving? Centre County grocery stores will close early or shift hours

With Thanksgiving just a few days away, the holiday season is about to kick into high gear. Whether you need to start preparing your holiday feast or head out for some last-minute fixings, there’s no time like the present to shop for Thanksgiving essentials.

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, Nov. 28, and most stores in the State College area will operate under modified or reduced hours for the holiday. Be sure to check their hours before you head out to grab a frozen turkey, can of cranberry sauce or pack of dinner rolls.

Here’s a brief overview of holiday hours for major grocery markets and liquor stores throughout some parts of Centre County. Some schedules and services may vary by location.

Aldi

Aldi stores are closed entirely on Thanksgiving, according to the company’s website. Both State College stores — 1798 N. Atherton St. and 780 Benner Pike — are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Fine Wine & Good Spirits

All Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores are closed all day on Thanksgiving, according to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. Four stores are located in State College: 127 Southridge Plaza, 230 W. Hamilton Ave., 1682 N. Atherton St. and 323 Benner Pike.

Giant

All Giant stores will close at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving, the company said on its website. Pharmacies are closed for the holiday but will reopen with regular hours Friday.

Sam’s Club

All Sam’s Club stores are closed on Thanksgiving, according to the company’s website. State College’s store — 381 Benner Pike — is usually open for club members from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Target

For the fifth year in a row, all Target stores will close on Thanksgiving, the company said in a Nov. 12 media release. That includes the Target stores located in State College: 315 Colonnade Blvd. off of North Atherton Street and 201 W. Beaver Ave. downtown.

Target’s Colonnade Boulevard location will open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday and close at midnight, a customer service representative said.

Trader Joe’s

All Trader Joe’s stores are closed on Thanksgiving. State College’s store, located at 243 Patriot Lane, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Walmart

All Walmart stores are closed entirely on Thanksgiving. The company operates two stores in State College: 1665 N. Atherton St. and 373 Benner Pike.

Wegmans

State College’s Wegmans, located at 345 Colonnade Blvd., will close at 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving before reopening with regular hours at 6 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29.

The store’s pharmacy is closed all day Thursday before returning to normal weekday hours (8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.) Friday.

Weis

All five Weis stores in Centre County will open at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving before closing at 3 p.m. for the holiday. Three of the stores — in Bellefonte (170 Buckaroo Lane), Philipsburg (501 N. Centre St.) and State College (560 Westerly Parkway) — are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, while the other two stores at 1471 Martin St. and 110 Rolling Ridge Drive in State College operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, respectively.

The three Weis pharmacies in Centre County — located at the company’s stores in Philipsburg, Bellefonte and Rolling Ridge Drive in State College — are closed all day on Thanksgiving.
