Historic Pennsylvania home located at entrance of a cemetery could be yours for $200K
A historic Centre County home just hit the market and could be yours for a modest price.
The property, located at 334 E. Howard St. in Bellefonte, is featured as the latest installment in our series highlighting historic homes on the local real estate market. This $200,000 home was listed for sale Dec. 5 by Vicki Wedler of Kissinger, Bigatel and Brower Realtors.
Here’s what you should know about the latest historic home to hit Centre County’s housing market.
A part of Bellefonte history
This home sits at the Howard Street entrance of Bellefonte’s Union Cemetery, the final resting place of significant figures like Evan Pugh, the first president of the school that would become Penn State, and several former Pennsylvania governors, including Andrew Curtin, James Beaver and Daniel Hastings.
According to the real estate listing, the home is believed to have once been part of Curtin’s law office and may have been moved from the Crider Exchange block of Bellefonte on North Allegheny Street. An alternative history suggests the home was built in 1859 as a gatehouse for the cemetery and the home of the cemetery’s superintendent, according to the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association.
The online listing notes the home’s front-facing gables are distinctive in the Gothic Revival or Folk Victorian style thanks to their downward-pointing decorations.
“The property has been acknowledged by historic preservation groups for its architectural and historic significance,” the real estate listing reads. “This property knows no equal. This is your chance to own a piece of history.”
Take a look inside
This home features four bedrooms and three full bathrooms spread out across 2,325 square feet.
The two-story home has several modern upgrades, including a new roof replaced within the last five years and a recent paint job to the exterior siding.
The main level features a kitchen with a range, refrigerator, ceiling fan and hardwood floor that is beautiful “for its age,” the listing reads. Also on the main level are a full bathroom, dining room and living room.
Upstairs, you’ll find another full bathroom, a laundry room and two bedrooms riding across the drive to the other side of the house. A spiral staircase leads back downstairs on the other side of the home, at the bottom of which is another bedroom and bathroom.
Closet space is no issue in this home, the online listing reads. Interested buyers might be particularly enamored by a walk-in cedar closet.
The concrete-floored basement has plenty of storage space and a utility room housing the natural gas furnace and a water heater installed in 2011.
The backyard is home to a 230-square-foot wood store building with concrete flooring and shelving. There’s also a brick patio with water features and a koi pond.
