  • Tractor-trailer crash on I-80 spilled 40,000+ pounds of mozzarella cheese.
  • Cleanup crews from multiple agencies responded; no injuries were reported.
  • A section of I-80 was closed for hours.

Part of Interstate 80 eastbound in Centre County was closed for hours Wednesday morning while first responders cleaned up after a tractor-trailer collision that left cheesy debris all over the roadway.

The crash occurred at about 5 a.m. at the 145.6 mile marker and one of the trailers broke open, causing a full load of mozzarella cheese to spill out onto the road. I-80 was closed down at the Kylertown exit.

Snow Shoe Fire Company Chief Beau Martin estimated the truck was carrying 40-45,000 pounds of cheese, and while some of the boxes remained sealed, many were punctured and left behind a cheesy mess.

Martin said the load of cheese will be “a total loss” and will go to a landfill because the trailer was broken open.

There were no injuries in the incident, Martin said. Snow Shoe Fire Company, Morrisdale Fire Company, Snow Shoe EMS and Medic 24 from Mount Nittany Medical Center were dispatched to the scene. Bigler Boyz Towing & Recovery handled most of the cleanup.

The road reopened at about 10 a.m. after the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation put sand down, according to a Facebook post from Centre County 911, which cautioned that the road was still slick and traffic was slow-moving.
