Portion of I-80 westbound in Centre County reopens after vehicle fire shut it down for hours

adrey@centredaily.com

A vehicle fire on Interstate-80 westbound completely shut down a three-mile stretch of the westbound route for several hours Saturday in Centre County, before the roadway reopened later that night.

According to PennDOT and public emergency services information, the vehicle fire occurred around 4:30 p.m. Saturday between exits 158/Milesburg and 161/Bellefonte. It wasn’t immediately known if there were any serious injuries, but the incident immediately caused significant traffic backups on the westbound route — especially given the added traffic due to the popular Central PA Festival of the Arts taking place this weekend.

I-80 west reopened by 8 p.m., according to PennDOT.

The interstate shutdown came just two days after the same three-mile stretch closed for several hours — but on the eastbound side — so cleanup crews could take care of a commercial vehicle crash from earlier that Thursday morning.

For more information, PennDOT encourages residents to check conditions on that roadway and more than 40,000 others by visiting 511PA.com or following @511PAStateColl on Twitter.
