State College, other PA areas under frost advisory. Here’s how cold it may get tonight into morning
Northwest Centre County is under a freeze warning and the rest of the county under a frost advisory Monday night into Tuesday morning, during what is proving to be an unusually cold start to May.
The National Weather Service warned county planters and farmers to protect plants overnight for a second day in a row, as the cold has the potential to kill crops.
Nighttime temperatures are projected to drop into the mid-20s to low-30s in the county’s higher-elevation northwestern portion, which includes Philipsburg and Snow Shoe. The southeastern portion of the county, including State College, Bellefonte and Millheim, may see temperatures in the low- to mid-30s.
Philipsburg has seen eight days this month with lows in the 20s or 30s, two of which broke records for the lowest temperature recorded on that specific day, according to the National Weather Service. State College has seen five days with lows in the 30s and none in the 20s.
Average May temperatures are usually between about 44 and 68 degrees in Philipsburg and about 50 and 69 degrees in State College.
The median date of the last spring freeze in Centre County is May 11 for the northwest portion and May 1 for the southeast. Temperatures for the rest of the week are projected to steadily rise, with summertime temperatures expected by the weekend.
