  • Contractor will stop traffic at I-99/Jacksonville Road 8 a.m.-2 p.m. to set beams.
  • High-Speed Interchange Project aims to realign local service and support regional freight.

Significant traffic congestion is expected Tuesday at a junction along Interstate 99 in the Bellefonte area, and PennDOT is cautioning motorists to be aware of traffic stoppages that could reach as high as 15 minutes at a time.

According to PennDOT, the contractor will be stopping traffic at the junction of I-99 and Jacksonville Road between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday to allow crews time to set bridge beams on the I-80 eastbound bridge. The work is part of the $259 million High-Speed Interchange Project, which will provide a direct connection between the two interstates.

“Drivers traveling this area are urged to build extra time into their travel schedules and exercise caution while traveling through the work zone,” PennDOT wrote in a news release. “Those familiar with the area may wish to consider alternate routes.”

The ultimate aim of the project, according to PennDOT, is to relieve traffic congestion while also realigning service for local traffic. It’s also designed to “support the regional freight economy.”

Although much of the bridgework will be handled during that six-hour window, PennDOT also said it’s possible drivers could “sporadically” encounter flaggers in the roadway over the next few weeks. The contractor, Trumbull Corporation of Pittsburgh, will require that time to install bridge beam diaphragms and place bridge deck pans.

The three-phase project is expected to finish in September 2030.
