Centre County remains under tornado watch until 10 p.m. Sunday. What to know
Centre County — and much of central Pennsylvania — remains under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. Sunday, meaning weather conditions might lead to the formation of severe storms and tornadoes.
A portion of northwestern Centre County was placed under a more serious tornado warning by the National Weather Service, but that warning expired at 8 p.m. Sunday. The NWS said shortly after 7:20 p.m. that severe thunderstorms near Karthaus were “capable of producing both tornadoes and extensive straight line wind damage.”
However, those thunderstorms were moving northeast, meaning largely away from Centre County and toward west-central Clinton County. According to public data, as of 8 p.m., no West Penn Power customers within Centre County were without electricity.
In the case of the more serious tornado warnings, the NWS advises residents to move away from windows and head to the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Staying inside a vehicle is unsafe. For a tornado watch, which Centre County is currently under, the NWS simply advises residents to be prepared.
“Review and discuss your emergency plans, take inventory of your supplies and check your safe room,” the NWS wrote on its website. “Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching.”
