Centre County residents flock to see Big Boy. See photos, videos from across central PA

The world’s largest operating steam engine is stopping in central Pennsylvania on its cross-country trip to celebrate the semiquincentennial, drawing crowds along the way that include plenty of Centre County residents.

Big Boy No. 4014 arrived in Altoona on Wednesday, with public viewings on Thursday and Friday at the Railroaders Memorial Museum. Before arriving in the Railroad City, Big Boy had a whistle stop in Lewistown before traveling through the Juniata Valley and up through Tyrone.

We asked Centre County train enthusiasts to share their photos of Big Boy on its central Pennsylvania route. Below are some of the submissions, and there’s still time to share yours. Email cdtnewstips@centredaily.com and be sure to include your name and where you live. This story may be updated with more photos and videos.

Rachel Sullivan called it a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to have her son and his grandfather see the locomotive together, as Bill Sackett’s family had relatives who worked on the railroads from Altoona to Harrisburg.
