Accident temporarily closes both directions of U.S. 322 in College Township

An accident has closed both directions of U.S. Route 322 between Interstate 99 and College Avenue in College Township.

The wreck appears to involve a tractor-trailer. A medical helicopter was dispatched and landed on the eastbound lanes. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.

Update (4:50 p.m.): According to State College police, all lanes of Route 322 are open.

One male driver was heavily entrapped in a two-vehicle accident late Wednesday afternoon between a car and a tractor-trailer, a State College police officer said on the scene. A female passenger was injured as well.

Both vehicles were traveling westbound when the accident occurred, the officer said.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle and flown from the scene via Life Flight helicopter. The officer could not say where the driver was taken.

The passenger was taken from the scene in an ambulance, he said. The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital in a police cruiser.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Update (6:30 p.m.): State College police released details on a two-vehicle accident that shut down U.S. Route 322 for more than an hour Wednesday

According to police, officers responded about 3 p.m. to the crash, which occurred between a car and a tractor-trailer in the westbound lanes of Route 322 between East College Avenue and East Park Avenue. The car was struck on the driver side by the tractor-trailer, causing the car to spin around and come to rest on the eastbound shoulder.

The road was closed to traffic shortly after the crash.

The male driver of the car, who was not identified, suffered serious injuries, police said, and was flown by Life Flight to UPMC Altoona for treatment. A female passenger was taken by ambulance to Mount Nittany Medical Center.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured, police said.

Alpha Fire Department and fire police, Centre LifeLink EMS and the state Department of Transportation responded to the scene as well, police said. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact police at 234-7150.
