Fire burns down Shay Lane corn crib
A smokey haze along Jacksonville Road on Saturday was caused by a corn crib fire on Shay Lane.
Owner Shannon Shay said everything was fine when he left the property just off Jacksonville Road at about 3 p.m. He said he wasn’t sure what started the fire that quickly brought down the two-story structure.
Shay said it was hard to see all that hard work burn away.
Howard Fire Company responded to the call — which came in shortly before 6 p.m. — and found the well-involved fire before calling for backup in case it spread to an adjacent barn.
Beech Creek-Blanchard and Citizen’s fire Companies also responded, said Howard Fire Company President Mark Ott.
Ott said no one was injured, and the cause of the fire was unknown.
The corn crib was full of hay. It was a total loss, Ott said.
He added that Miles Township Fire Company was covering the Howard station while the company responded to the fire.
Marion Township workers assisted at the scene with a skid loader and backhoe. Bellefonte EMS was also on the scene.
