Tractor-trailer fire shuts down I-80 eastbound

A tractor-trailer fire engulfed a vehicle on Interstate 80 Wednesday.

The fire began at the rear tires of the trailer, which was carrying plastic, according to Centre County 911 dispatchers. The fire worked its way toward the front of the truck, which was unhooked from the trailer after the fire began.

The fire occurred at about 1 p.m. at I-80 mile marker 162, between Bellefonte and Lamar, in the eastbound lane. The fire caused enough smoke for a black plume to be seen from as far away as College Township. Traffic going eastbound was also shut down at about 1:05 p.m.

Nearby brush also caught fire.

It is unknown if anyone was injured.
